Lightning Protection Tips of LED Display

LED displays, being precision electronic equipment, are vulnerable to lightning during the thunderstorm season, which can lead to equipment failure. When implementing the protection measures, it is crucial to consider the specific geographical environment and the condition of the LED display. Professional design and installation should be employed to effectively enhance the lightning protection capabilities, thereby ensuring its safe operation. Here are some common measures:

1. Grounding System

Grounding system is to eliminate the common impedance and prevent the interference of capacitive coupling, protect the equipment and personnel. A reliable grounding system guarantees the stable operation while safeguarding the safety of the equipment and personnel.

2. Building Lightning Protection

The building’s lightning protection system, the lighting network, should be in place upon completion. The design against lightning strikes mainly focuses on the system equipment and power system.

3. Display Lightning Protection

Lightning rods are installed at the top of the building where the display is located to avoid lightning strikes by directing the lightning into the ground.

4. Distribution Box Lightning Protection

Install a surge arrester of power at the top of the display’s distribution cabinet, grounded to the PE terminal of the three-phase five-wire system. Effective grounding is vital for lightning protection; joint grounding is commonly employed. Grounding resistance should be below 1 Ω. Both operational and lightning protection grounding are combined, with a maximum resistance of ≤4Ω.

5. Signal Lightning Protection

Surge interference from lightning typically enters through the power lines and communication cables of externally connected devices. This can be mitigated using an optoelectronic isolation or fiber-optic communication.

6. Routine Maintenance

Conduct regular checks of the lightning device and grounding system, especially before the thunderstorm season to make sure it functions well.
